HAL Looks to Build Light Helicopters to Develop Medium Chopper Expertise

HAL is pivoting from Su-30MKI assembly to rotorcraft, having delivered 320+ Dhruv ALHs. The company sees light helicopter manufacturing as the path to medium chopper capability.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is repositioning its strategic focus from fighter jet assembly to rotorcraft manufacturing, as the Su-30MKI production pipeline declines. The move aims to maintain HAL's position as India's top defence PSU.

HAL has already delivered over 320 Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) to the Army, Navy, and IAF, establishing a strong foundation in rotorcraft manufacturing. The company views light helicopter manufacturing as a critical pathway to developing medium-class helicopter expertise — a segment with significant strategic and commercial potential.
