Obituary: Michael Collins

The Society mourns the Last Flight of Michael Collins (F), Apollo 11 command module pilot, who passed away on April 28, 2021.

The Society was saddened to hear that Michael Collins (F) took his Last Flight on 28 April 2021. Mike was born in Rome, Italy, on October 31, 1930. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1952. Collins served as an experimental test pilot at the Air Force Flight Test Center, Edwards Air Force Base, and performed flight tests on the F-100, TF-102, F-104, F-106, T-33, T-37B and T-38. He logged over 5,000 hours flying time. Collins served as command module pilot on Apollo 11, July 16-24, 1969—the first lunar landing mission. He remained aboard the command module, Columbia, in lunar orbit while Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin descended to the lunar surface.
